The Woman’s Cancer Association of the University of Miami has a long history of raising funds to support the cancer research doctors of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Since its beginning in 1959, we have raised over $12,000,000.00. We have also provided funds for the Pediatric Palliative Care Program, established the Bereavement Room for families of pediatric cancer patients, and supplied educational materials for the library at the Batchelor Children’s Cancer Institute.
In 2015-2016, we awarded grants totaling $322,000 supporting eight doctors in their cancer research, which provide new treatments, patient options, and the saving of lives. We gave more than last year thanks to the hard work of all our volunteers. None of our executive board receives a salary, as we are an all-volunteer organization. Many thanks to our three chapters, Barton-Ravlin, Franklin C. Bush, and Heidi Hewes for their fundraising events throughout the year. Our funding is a result of individual and family grants, community partners, corporate sponsors, fundraisers, proceeds from the Bargain Box, our resale store located at 1350 W. Flagler St., and many thousands of volunteer hours by the members of the WCA. This year’s fundraisers can be found here.
