The Molly Bush Silver Lady Fund was established in 1963 to assist cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Social Workers at the hospitals inform the Woman’s Cancer Association of cancer patients that need temporary funding for transportation, medicine, supplements, child care, or other expenses. The Silver Lady Fund provides $200 a month for three to six months depending on the individual circumstances.
The Silver Angel Tea is the annual event that supports the Silver Lady Fund. The program includes speakers who are cancer survivors, as well as doctors and social workers. The Tea also has entertainment, a luncheon, a silent auction, and is enjoyed by all who attend.
In addition, the three WCA chapters collect “Birthday Dollars” at each of their meetings. This money also goes toward the Silver Lady Fund.
In 2013, the Silver Lady Fund awarded a grant of $3,000 to Dr. Patricia Cantwell for the Palliative Care Art Therapy Program for children with cancer. Dr. Cantwell is Director of Palliative Care at Holtz Children’s Hospital. Her program provides is provides care, comfort and activities for children with terminal cancer.
