Silver Lady Fund

The Molly Bush Silver Lady Fund of the Woman’s Cancer Association of the University of Miami (WCA) was established in 1963 to financially assist needy oncology patients undergoing treatment at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and University of Miami Hospital. Recipients are identified and referred by Social Services at these facilities and patients are awarded funds up to $600 with a budget of $3,000 a month. These funds are administered to help with various needs such as emergency housing, transportation, medicines and supplements, childcare and medical emergency copayments. Currently, the Silver Lady Fund is the only entity able to provide funds directly to cancer patients.

The Silver Lady Fund also awards a yearly grant to Dr. Patricia Cantwell at Holtz Children’s Hospital for the Palliative Care Program. This program provides care and comfort activities for children with terminal cancer and their families. The WCA has a Bereavement Room at Holtz and educational information is available for the families.

The main fundraising event is an annual Silver Angel Brunch. The program for the Brunch includes cancer survivor patients, physicians, and social workers from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Donations for the Silver Lady Fund are collected from WCA members, the local community, and student groups throughout the year. The two chapters, Barton Ravlin and Heidi Hewes, raise fund at events called “Grape Therapy with an Educational Twist.” Here Doctors share about their research, provide information about cancer prevention in a social gathering, and funds raised goes to the Silver Lady Fund. All money raised is used to provide financial assistance to our local south Florida cancer patients directly. Please consider donating.
